We are Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s cultural, events and destination agency

We enrich Auckland's cultural life and vibrancy through inspirational experiences, activations and events that bring our region's unique identity and spirit to life.

We look after our some of our region’s most-loved taonga and places, ensure they are accessible, and enhance them for the benefit of current and future generations. We strive to ensure the world knows about the things that make our region special.

We deliver a diverse programme of experiences and events to help make Auckland a desirable place to live, work and visit. We are focused on growing revenue through events, sponsorship, venue sales and more to reinvest in Auckland's success – while reducing our reliance on ratepayer funding.

We do this through four strategic outcomes:

  • Experiences and events: We curate and deliver inspirational experiences, activations and events which drive and enhance Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s unique identity, vibrancy and prosperity.
  • Taonga and places: We look after and enrich Auckland’s taonga and places for the benefit of current and future generations
  • Auckland’s reputation: We strive to ensure Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is known and loved for what makes it unique and special.
  • All Aucklanders: We positively engage all Aucklanders through our diverse programme of experiences and events, and our accessible taonga and places.

Guided by the principle of kotahitanga — one shared purpose — we partner with the wider Auckland Council whānau and organisations across the public and private sectors to shape a city that thrives.

About us

Māori outcomes

Me mahi tahi tātou mo te oranga o te katoa. We must work together for the wellbeing of all.

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited recognises Te Tiriti o Waitangi, acknowledging its importance to our mahi. We know Auckland’s Māori identity is a unique point of difference in the world. As such, we are committed to reflecting te reo Māori in our communications, incorporating te ao Māori in our programming and events, and to advancing the aspirations of Māori in our community.

Our Māori Outcomes Plan, Te Mahere Aronga, provides the framework and context for our work. It outlines what we are planning to achieve and how we will be accountable to the people of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Across all levels of our organisation, we are committed to strengthening relationships and enhancing engagement with Māori entities and individuals.

About us

Climate change and sustainability

We take an action-oriented approach to environmental sustainability through our Climate Change and Environment Strategic Plan.

The plan initially focuses on key priorities across the environment pillar – climate resilience, emissions reduction, waste management, and responsible water use – and supports the social pillar of building an empowered organisation to embed sustainable practices across everything we do. Read about our sustainability story here

Our primary goal is to set clear targets and prioritised actions that directly address climate change and environmental impacts within our operations. This is a living plan – designed to adapt, evolve and respond to new challenges and opportunities as we work toward a more resilient future for Tāmaki Makaurau.

About us

Our name

Our bilingual name recognises the equal weight and importance of te reo Māori as an official language and our Tiriti-based commitments to Māori. It reinforces the importance we place on cultural leadership and economic development for our region and helps us articulate what makes Tāmaki Makaurau such an incredible place to live, work and do business. The name Tātaki Auckland Unlimited was finalised with input from the Mana Whenua Forum, Ngā Matarae, and staff. It was officially adopted on 13 May, 2022.

  • The word ‘Tātaki’ embodies a quality of positive leadership that sets the pace, leading by example. 'Taki' means the spearhead formation used in battle.
  • Tātaki can be used to describe leading a haka, for example, or conducting an orchestra. Our name establishes a tangible and emotional connection between our people and the community we serve. It tells the story of the organisation we aspire to be: an organisation that leads by example in honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and one that is culturally inclusive, creative, and bold.
