A new partnership between GridAKL and Denver Economic Development & Opportunity (DEDO) is set to open up new prospects for startup technology businesses in Auckland and Denver.

GridAKL is Tātaki Auckland Unlimited’s innovation campus based at Wynyard Quarter. It is at the heart of the region’s vibrant innovation network and is designed to maximise innovation and entrepreneurship by harnessing the power of collaboration.

The City2City agreement, which was announced today during Denver Startup Week (16–21 September 2024), sees GridAKL and DEDO commit to building stronger connections between the technology startup communities in Auckland and Denver.

The partnership is an important part of Tātaki Auckland Unlimited’s work to establish and grow the region’s innovation network, and to position Auckland as a global tech city. It aims to encourage collaboration and offer increased support to boost the startup ecosystems in both cities.

Nick Hill, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited’s Chief Executive, says this agreement “will help technology businesses explore opportunities in both Auckland and Denver, helping them expand their market reach, and get greater access to local resources.

“Eligible businesses from each city can benefit from free or discounted workspaces for up to 90 days and will receive support with introductions and connections to local networks, making it easier to enter new markets.”

Mayor of the City and County of Denver, Mike Johnston, says, “Denver businesses are the best in the world and deserve avenues to expand and thrive at home while also leading on the global stage. This new partnership will benefit both cities for years to come by supporting companies as they explore exciting global opportunities, connecting our entrepreneurial ecosystems, fostering innovation, and creating lasting benefits for Denver and Auckland businesses and communities alike."

Denver was recently recognised by ADP Research as having the top job market in the United States, out of 55 metro areas. In addition to the City2City agreement with Auckland, Denver is home to a stellar and growing community of New Zealand businesses and government representatives that contribute to the local economy.

Nick Hill says the City2City partnership is consistent with the vision outlined in Tech Tāmaki Makaurau, a three-year strategy to grow Auckland’s technology industry, create jobs and attract talent and investment to the region.

“GridAKL already has partnerships in place with organisations in Australia and Japan. Expanding international connections through this partnership with Denver – which is already home to around 40 New Zealand tech companies – is a logical next step to offer a strong support network for new entrants.”
