Tātaki Auckland Unlimited’s economic development functions are moving into Auckland Council.
This follows decisions late last year by the Auckland Council Governing Body (mayor and councillors) to reform the structure of Auckland’s council-controlled organisations.
The decisions are part of Auckland Council’s Annual Plan 2025/2026 (annual budget) process.
The mayor, councillors and Auckland Council Chief Executive have stressed that the economic development functions and contribution by staff is valued and there will be no reduction to investment or service levels.
Moving the TAU economic development functions into Auckland Council is seen as an opportunity to strengthen council’s ability to provide a more coordinated approach to wider economic development activities and improve regional productivity.
As part of these changes, the mayor and councillors have agreed that strategy, planning and policy making will be done by Auckland Council, under the direct oversight of elected members, to support a more coordinated and prioritised approach to investment decisions.
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited is working through a process with Auckland Council to implement this decision, to take effect no later than 30 June 2025.
Background information about the Auckland Council Annual Plan, the Adopted Mayoral Proposal and the council decision can be found here. Formal progress updates on these changes feature in the Auckland Council Chief Executive’s update at each monthly Auckland Council Governing Body meeting (February’s update here).
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited will continue to deliver major events and destination marketing for Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, in addition to being home to some of the region’s most beloved arts, cultural, conservation and heritage institutions, enhancing Auckland’s cultural vibrancy, providing a wealth of enriching experiences and opportunities, and telling Auckland’s story to the world.
